Introduction: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is considered one of the most common developmental neurological disorders. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of «Neurofeedback Therapy» with «Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy» on behavioral problems in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test-post-test and 2-month follow-up with a control group. The sample was screened by clinical assessment by a child psychiatrist and the «Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Inventory» (score higher than 18 out of a total of 54 points). The samples were purposively selected from children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder referring to a clinic in Tehran and were randomly assigned to the «Neurofeedback Therapy» (16 people), «Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy» (16 people), and control (16 people) groups by simple random method (drawing lots). The instruments used included a demographic questionnaire, the «Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale» and the «Child Behavior Checklist». The content validity of the instruments was qualitatively assessed and the reliability was assessed by internal consistency using Cronbach›s alpha coefficient. Children in their groups received intervention in 20 sessions of 45-minute (twice a week), while the control group did not receive any intervention during this period. Data were collected before and after the intervention and 2 months later for follow-up in the 3 groups. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 26 software.
Results: Both «Neurofeedback Therapy» and «Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy” were effective on aggression and disobedience, and the effect of «Neurofeedback Therapy» was significantly greater (P<0.006). The greatest mean reduction in aggression was observed in «Neurofeedback Therapy» compared to control (10.4), and in disobedience also in «Neurofeedback Therapy» compared to control (60.3) (P<0.001). The results also indicated the persistence of the therapeutic effect.
Conclusion: «Neurofeedback Therapy» and «Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy» were effective in improving externalizing behavioral problems. The «Neurofeedback Therapy» is recommended to specialists as a more effective method for improving behavioral problems in children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
