Abstract:   (51 Views)
Introduction: Mothers with mentally retarded children are faced with numerous psychological problems and challenges. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of "Emotional Schema Therapy" and "Positive Psychotherapy” on increasing distress tolerance in mothers with mentally retarded children.
Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a follow-up period of 2 months. The statistical population consisted of all mothers with mentally retarded children in Andimeshk city, from whom 36 people were selected using convenience method sampling. This number was randomly assigned to two intervention groups and a control group. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the “Distress Tolerance Scale”. The content validity of the instrument was measured qualitatively and the reliability was measured using the internal consistency method and by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. After 10 sessions of "Emotional Schema Therapy" and 10 sessions of "Positive Psychotherapy" for the intervention and control groups, the data were analyzed in SPSS. 26.
Results: "Emotional Schema Therapy" and “Positive Psychotherapy” in the intervention groups increased distress tolerance compared to the control group (P=0.001). The mean of distress tolerance during the study period showed a significant difference between the "Emotional Schema Therapy" and “Positive Psychotherapy” and the control group (P=0.001). The mean of distress tolerance between "Emotional Schema Therapy" and "Positive Psychotherapy" groups did not show a significant difference (P=1.000).
Conclusions: "Emotional Schema Therapy" and "Positive Psychotherapy” increased distress tolerance in mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. It is suggested that the above two methods be included in the educational and therapeutic programs of these mothers.
