Introduction: Students experience a lot of psychological stress due to their responsibilities, expectations, and environmental pressures, and many influential factors play a role in the persistence of stress. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between metacognitive beliefs and locus of control with the mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty in students in Mashhad City.
Methods: The research method is descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of this study included all students of Islamic Azad University, Mashhad Branch in 2024. Among them, 351 people were selected according to the inclusion criteria for the study through convenience sampling using the Morgan table, and 370 people (Out of 9 majors: architecture, civil engineering, law, psychology, English, electricity, management, computer science, and accounting at the undergraduate level) were selected after considering the dropout. In order to collect data, a demographic questionnaire, the "Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire", "Rotter Locus of Control Scale" and "Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale" were used. The validity and reliability of the instruments used were not measured due to time constraints and previous research was sufficient. The resulting data were analyzed in Amos.24 and SPSS.24.
Results: Metacognitive beliefs significantly predicted external locus of control among students of the Islamic Azad University, Mashhad Branch (β = 0.130, P = 0.001). Intolerance of uncertainty also significantly predicted external locus of control in these students (β= 0.280, P= 0.001). In addition, metacognitive beliefs significantly predicted intolerance of uncertainty (β= 0.190, P =0.001). Furthermore, metacognitive beliefs predicted external locus of control through the mediating role of intolerance of uncertainty (β= 0.053, P= 0.001).
Conclusion: The metacognitive beliefs and intolerance of uncertainty play significant roles in predicting external locus of control among students. Moreover, intolerance of uncertainty mediates the relationship between metacognitive beliefs and external locus of control. Therefore, it is recommended that educational and counseling programs in universities implement interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and increasing students’ tolerance of uncertainty. Additionally, organizing cognitive–metacognitive skills training workshops may help reduce students’ tendency toward an external locus of control and strengthen their sense of internal control.
