Introduction: Body dysmorphic disorder is one of the factors affecting students' social and academic performance, which can be influenced by various factors. Therefore, the present study aimed to predict the role of body dysmorphic disorder and the impact of self-criticism and addiction to virtual networks in female high school students in Zanjan.
Methods: The research method was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population of this study was female high school governmental students in Zanjan who were studying in 2024-2025. A statistical sample of 366 people was selected according to the Morgan table using multi-stage cluster random sampling method. Data collection was carried out with a demographic questionnaire and the "Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale-Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder", the "Self-Criticism Scale" and the "Questionnaire on Addiction to virtual social Networks in Adolescents". The validity of the instruments was determined using the content validity index method, and the reliability was determined using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data analysis was performed in SPSS. 26.
Results: A positive correlation was found between body dysmorphic disorder and self-criticism, between self-criticism and addiction to virtual social networks, and between addiction to virtual social networks and body dysmorphic disorder at a significant level (P<0.05). The predictive role of body dysmorphic disorder between self-criticism and addiction to virtual social networks was also confirmed at a significant level (P<0.001).
Conclusions: Self-criticism and addiction to virtual social networks predict body dysmorphic disorder in students. Therefore, it is suggested that counselors and psychologists focus on dysmorphic disorder and self-criticism and on treating addiction to virtual social networks in students and schools, and also the need to hold relevant educational workshops to inform students and their parents about the dangers of excessive and addictive use of virtual social networks.
