Auditing standards for safe surgery in the operating room of selected hospital of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences

Introduction: Surgical complications are leading cause of death and disability in the worldwide. Considering the importance of patient safety and related audit criteria, this study aimed to audit standards of surgery in the operating room of selected hospital of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Methods: In this descriptive study, research environment was public and heart-plastic surgery room in selected hospital of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. The study samples consisted of 100 randomly selected surgical. Data was collected with WHO surgical safety checklist in the operating room. Validity and reliability of study tool determined with content and face validity and Inter- rater coefficient respectively. Data analyzed with SPSS/16. Result: 73.6% of the standards of safe surgical will be respected in the operating room of selected hospital of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. 74.72% of surgical safety standards in before anesthesia, 64.81% after unconscious and before the incision and 73.6% after the wound closure until the patient out of the operating room will be respected. Conclusion: Since the criteria of safe surgery is below the standards suggested by World Health Organization, hospital managers, supervisors, and operation room heads are supposed to patient safety as a serious issue that must be improved.
