Introduction. Generalized anxiety disorders are a broad range of mental health problems characterized by excessive fear, worry, and anxiety. These disorders can have a significant impact on a person's emotional regulation and self-criticism, disrupting their daily activities. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of "Schema Therapy" on emotional regulation and self-criticism in people with generalized anxiety disorder.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control and follow-up group. Among adult patients referred to the counseling centers in Isfahan who had completed the “Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale”. 40 subjects who had obtained an acceptable score (at least 8 out of 21) were selected and divided into 2 intervention groups: intervention group (20 subjects) and control group (20 subjects) using a convenience sampling method. The data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, “Emotion Regulation Questionnaire”, and “Levels of Self-Criticism Scale”. The validity of the instruments was based on previous studies. Reliability was calculated using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The intervention group received one 90-minute "Schema Therapy" session per week for 10 sessions over 2.5 months. The control group did not receive any intervention. They responded to it at the end of the treatment and 45 days after the end of the treatment. The control group received the intervention 45 days after the completion of treatment. The data were analyzed using SPSS .26.
Results: "Schema Therapy” was effective on emotional regulation and self-criticism in people with generalized anxiety disorder, and the treatment was stable in the 45-day follow-up phase after the completion of treatment.
Conclusion: “Schema Therapy” can be effective and beneficial in improving emotional regulation and self-criticism in individuals. Therefore, it is suggested that people with generalized anxiety disorder benefit from “Schema Therapy” in emotional regulation and self-criticism.
