Introduction: Academic stress is one of the major psychological problems affecting students' mental health and academic performance. The present study aimed to examine the prediction of academic stress based on problem-solving styles, with self-compassion as a mediating variable, among students of the Islamic Azad University, Zanjan Branch.
Methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational research design. The statistical population included all students of Islamic Azad University, Zanjan Branch (N = 12,000) in the second semester of 2024. From among three faculties (mMedical sciences, humanities, and engineering), a sample of 370 students was selected based on Morgan’s table using convenience sampling. The research instruments included the demographic questionnaire; “Student-Life Stress Inventory”, “Problem Solving Style Questionnaire”, and “Self-Compassion Scale”. Content validity was assessed qualitatively, and reliability was examined through internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Data analysis was performed using SPSS .27 and AMOS. 26.
Results: The findings indicated that the helplessness (r= 0.358), control (r = 0.450), and avoidance (r= 0.389) problem-solving styles were positively and significantly correlated with academic stress (P<0.01). In contrast, the creativity (r= −0.284), confidence (r= −0.358), and approach (r = −0.316) problem-solving styles showed significant negative correlations with student life stress (P < 0.01). Furthermore, self-compassion was negatively and significantly correlated with student life stress (r= −0.408, P<0.01). In addition, the mediation analysis revealed that self-compassion played a significant mediating role in the relationship between problem-solving styles and student life stress through a significant indirect effect (β= −0.055).
Conclusion: The findings of the present study highlight the importance of problem-solving styles and the mediating role of self-compassion in predicting student life stress among university students. These findings may contribute to improving students' mental health and provide valuable implications for the development of effective preventive and educational interventions. Therefore, it is recommended that universities implement educational programs focused on enhancing adaptive problem-solving skills and fostering self-compassion to reduce student life stress among students.
