Introduction: Today, in psychotherapy, third-wave therapies emphasize awareness and acceptance of emotions, cognitions, and behaviors rather than challenging cognitions. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" on emotion regulation and distress tolerance strategies in distress students of Qazvin Islamic Azad University.
Methods: The method of the present study is semi-experimental with pre-test-post-test-2-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population of the present study was all students of Qazvin Islamic Azad University in the academic year 1400-1401, from which 30 people were selected by available sampling method and were placed in 2 intervention groups (15 people) and control (15 people) by simple random assignment by drawing lots. The tools used in this study included demographic questionnaire, "Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire", "Distress Tolerance Scale" and "Beck Anxiety Inventory". The content validity of the instruments was measured qualitatively and the reliability was measured by the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. After implementing "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" for 8 Sessions at 90-minute sessions (2 sessions per week), the data for the intervention group were analyzed in SPSS .24.
Results: "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" had a direct and positive effect on emotion regulation strategies (f (1-37)= 242/153, P<0/05), so that it was able to increase the level of emotion regulation strategies of distress students. "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" had a direct and positive effect on distress tolerance (f(1-37)= 18/264, P<0/05), so that it was able to increase the level of distress tolerance of distress students.
Conclusion: "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" had a direct and positive effect on emotion regulation and distress tolerance strategies of anxious students. It is suggested that clinical psychologists and therapists seek help from the above therapy in their interventions, especially in the field of focusing on emotion regulation and distress tolerance strategies..
