Introduction: The aim of the present study is to determine the effectiveness of “Schema Therapy" on anxiety sensitivity and fear of positive and negative evaluation in generalized anxiety disorder.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design, control group, and follow-up (45 days). Among the clients of Isfahan counseling centers who had completed the “Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale”, individuals who scored 10 or higher from 21 (a cutoff score of 10 indicating a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder) were selected and divided into 2 intervention groups: the intervention group (17 people) and the control group (17 people) by simple random sampling. The data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, the “Anxiety Sensitivity Index”, the “Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale”, and “Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale”. The validity of the instruments used was based on previous research; however, reliability was determined by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The intervention group samples underwent "Schema Therapy" for 2 and a half months (one session per week for 90 minutes for 10 sessions). The control group They did not receive any intervention during the study and were subjected to "Schema Therapy" after the study ended. Data analysis was performed using SPSS . 26.
Results: The difference between the mean of the research variables in the groups in the post-test and follow-up stages is significant overall, so there is a significant difference between the sample individuals in the intervention and control groups in the research variables in the post-test and follow-up stages (P>0.001).
Conclusion: “Schema Therapy” had a significant effect on anxiety sensitivity, fear of positive evaluation, and fear of negative evaluation in people with generalized anxiety disorder, and the effects of the intervention were stable at the follow-up stage. It is suggested that psychologists use “Schema Therapy” to control anxiety sensitivity, fear of positive evaluation, and fear of negative evaluation.
