Introduction: Depression is a disorder in adolescence and has many social, academic, and functional consequences. Therefore, its effective treatment is of great importance. Accordingly, the present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" and "Process-Oriented Therapy" on psychological flexibility and depression in adolescents with major depressive disorder.
Methods: The present study was a Single-subject design study method. The sample consisted of 10 adolescents with major depressive disorder who referred to counseling centers in Isfahan in 2023 and were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the "Psychological Flexibility Questionnaire" and the "Beck's Depression Inventory". Content validity was assessed qualitatively and reliability was assessed using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. 5 subjects underwent 10 weekly one-hour sessions of "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" and another 5 subjects underwent 8 one-hour sessions of "Process-Oriented Therapy" and variables were examined at baseline, treatment and 2-month follow-up. Visual plotting, stable change index, clinical significance indices were used to analyze the results.
Results: According to the results and based on the values of the Resilient Change Index (RCI≥1.96), both interventions were statistically significant in reducing depressive symptoms (P>0.05). Also, based on the values of the Resilient Change Index (RCI≥1.96), "Process-Oriented Therapy" was statistically significant for the components of avoidance, acceptance, and exploitation in the treatment and follow-up stages. This significance of "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" was statistically significant for the components of avoidance and acceptance for all subjects except the second subject in the treatment and follow-up stages, based on the values of the Resilient Change Index (RCI≥1.96).
Conclusion: "Process-Oriented Therapy" is more effective in reducing depression and modulating related psychological components, especially in the follow-up phase, due to its personalized and trans diagnostic nature. It is suggested that the use of "Process-Oriented Therapy” be included in the agenda of specialists, psychologists, and psychiatrists when working with patients with depressive disorders.
