Introduction: Emotional empathy and distress tolerance are among the factors affecting the perceived quality of marital relationship. The aim of the present study was to predict the perceived quality of marital relationship based on emotional empathy with the mediation of distress tolerance in married men and women.
Methods: The descriptive research method was correlation type. The statistical population of the present study included all the married people of Andisheh town in 2024. Among them, 375 people were selected by convenience sampling method from phase 4 of Andisheh settlement. The research instruments included demographic questionnaire, "Perceived Relationship Quality Components Inventory", "Emotional Empathy Questionnaire" and "Distress Tolerance Scale". The validity of the instruments was measured using content validity using qualitative method and reliability using internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS .25 and Amos. 24.
Results: Emotional empathy positively and significantly predicts the perceived quality of marital relationship components (β=0.148, P=0.010). Distress tolerance positively and significantly predicts the perceived quality of marital relationship components (β=0.393, P=0.001). Emotional empathy positively and significantly predicts the perceived quality of marital relationship components through the mediation of distress tolerance (β=0.085, P=0.001).
Conclusions: perceived quality of marital relationship components is predicted based on emotional empathy with the mediation of distress tolerance in married men and women. Therefore, it is suggested that family counselors and psychologists focus on emotional empathy and tolerance of distress in couple therapy in order to improve the quality of marital relationship.
