Introduction: Adolescence is an important period of life, which includes important psychological changes in addition to physiological changes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of "Internal Family System Therapy" on emotion regulation in adolescents with behavioral problems in Isfahan.
Methods: The method of the present study was semi-experimental with a control group and a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design. The statistical population included adolescents with behavioral problems aged 15 to 18 in Isfahan in the academic year 2024. Through purposive sampling and the implementation of the "Child Behavior Checklist", 40 adolescents with behavioral problems were selected and randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups by drawing lots. A demographic questionnaire, the "Child Behavior Checklist" and the "Emotion Regulation Questionnaire" were used to collect data. The content validity of the instruments was measured qualitatively and the reliability was measured by the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. For the intervention group, 8 sessions (90 minutes) of "Internal Family System Therapy" were held. During the sessions, 3 people were eliminated from the group and the final number was reduced to 17 people. Of course, the number in the control group did not change and was 20 people by the end. The data were analyzed in SPSS .24.
Results: In the cognitive reappraisal and suppression components, the between-group effects indicated a difference between the two groups in the research stages (P<0.05). The results of the Bonferroni post hoc test showed that in the cognitive reappraisal component, there was a significant difference between the pre-test, post-test and follow-up scores (P<0.05), and the score of the intervention group increased, but there was no significant difference between the post-test and follow-up scores (P>0.05), indicating the continuation of the treatment effect. In the suppression component, there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, and the scores in the intervention group decreased significantly, but there was no significant difference between the pre-test and follow-up scores (P>0.05).
Conclusion: "Internal Family System Therapy" had a significant effect on emotion regulation and cognitive reappraisal and suppression components. It is suggested that psychologists use the results of the present study to manage emotion regulation in adolescents with behavioral problems.
