Introduction: Lack of attention to auditory memory, motor development, and processing speed in children with hearing impairment can gradually lead to a decline in these skills and negative effects on the lives of these children. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of the "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package" on auditory memory, motor development, and processing speed in 8- to 12-year-old children with hearing impairment.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included 176 children with hearing impairment in Abhar township. Among them, 30 children were selected using convenience sampling and divided into 2 intervention groups (15 children) and control groups (15 children) using simple randomization based on a random number table. The data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the “Lincoln-Ozeretsky Motor Development Test” and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition”. The validity of the instrument was examined using the content validity index and the reliability was examined using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package” for the intervention group consisted of 8 sessions of 45 minutes. The data were analyzed in SPSS. 25.
Results: The "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package" in the intervention group significantly improved auditory memory (P<0.05). The effect of the "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package” on the motor development was also significant in the intervention group (P<0.05). Also, the implementation of the "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package” significantly increased the speed of processing of children with hearing impairment in the intervention group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: "Cognitive Rehabilitation Package" can help improve auditory memory, motor development, and speed of processing in children with hearing impairment. Therefore, it is suggested that these interventions be used in educational and therapeutic programs for children with hearing impairment.
