Introduction: The prevalence of intellectual disability among children causes many psychological problems, and therefore targeted interventions are necessary to improve their condition. The current research was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of "Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy "on working memory, creativity and cognitive regulation emotion of female students with intellectual disability in Zanjan city.
Methods: The current research was of semi-experimental type with pre-test-post-test with control group. The statistical population of the research included all female students with intellectual disability in second grade of elementary exceptional schools in Zanjan city during the academic year 2023-2024. Using convenience sampling method, 30 female students with intellectual disabilities were selected and assigned to two equal groups (15 students in each group) through simple random assignment. Research data collection was done with demographic questionnaires, “Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Fourth Edition”, “Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking”, and “Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Kids”. The content and face validity of the instruments were checked by qualitive method and reliability by internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The experimental group trained 8 sessions of 60 minutes by “Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy"(2 sessions per week) and the control group remained on the waiting list for training. Data were analyzed in SPSS. 27.
Results: The findings revealed "Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy" significantly improved working memory, creative thinking, and cognitive emotion regulation in female students with intellectual disabilities (P<0.01).
Conclusion: “Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy” significantly contributes to enhancing working memory, promoting creative thinking, and improving emotional cognitive regulation in female students with intellectual disabilities.
It is suggested that “Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy” be implemented as a complementary educational method in special schools for female students with intellectual disabilities.
