The Mediating Role of Help-Seeking Behavior Between Helicopter Parenting and Academic Entitlement in Students

Introduction: Academic entitlement is one of the factors affecting the academic performance of students, which can be influenced by various factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the mediating role of help-seeking behavior between helicopter parenting and academic entitlement in students of Islamic Azad University of Zanjan.
Methods: The study was descriptive-correlation. The statistical population of this research was the students of Azad Islamic University of Zanjan, who were studying at the Bachelor and Master of 2023-2024 academic year. A statistical sample of 325 students was selected based on Morgan's table and among the non-random and purposive sampling method. Data with demographic questionnaire, “Help-Seeking Behavior Questionnaire”, “Helicopter Parenting Instrument–Short Version”, “Academic Entitlement Scale”, and were collected. The validity of the instruments was done by qualitative method and reliability by internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data analysis was done in SPSS 24 and Amos 24.
Results: There is a significant positive correlation between helicopter parenting and academic entitlement, between help-seeking behavior and helicopter parenting and between help-seeking behavior and academic entitlement (P<0.05). Also, the mediator of help-seeking behavior between helicopter parenting and academic entitlement can be examined at a significant level (P<0.001).
Conclusions: Helicopter parenting and help-seeking behavior directly, indirectly and positively have a significant correlation with the academic entitlement. Therefore, it is suggested to parents pay attention to their parenting style and avoid excessive support. Also, parents and teachers have reasonable expectations for the children so that everyone can expect success according to their efforts.
