Introduction: Suicide reflects interactions between psychological, biological and social factors. Patients with mental health problems show more suicidal tendencies. The purpose of this research is to compare emotional expressiveness, ambiguity tolerance, experiential avoidance and anxiety sensitivity in patients with psychiatric disorders with and without a history of suicide in Shahid Dr. Beheshti Psychiatric Hospital in Zanjan city.
Methods: The present research method is descriptive-comparative. The statistical population of this research is all patients with psychiatric disorders with and without a history of suicide in Shahid Dr. Beheshti Psychiatric Hospital in Zanjan city in 2024. The number of the community is 120, which were sampled using the full enumeration method. Of these, 94 instruments were completed and delivered, 41 of which were patients with a history of suicide and 53 patients without a history of suicide. To collect data, a demographic, "Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire", "Ambiguity Tolerance Scale II", "Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II" and "Anxiety Sensitivity Index" was used. The validity of the instruments was limited to previous researches and the reliability of the instruments was measured by internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The data was analyzed in SPSS .27.
Results: The results of multivariate analysis of variance and t-test showed that there is a significant difference in emotional expressiveness and anxiety sensitivity at the error level of 0.05 and the effect size of 0.97 in patients with and without a history of suicide. Also, ambiguity tolerance with the absolute value of t value equal to 4.61 and the average difference of 6.52 and acceptance and action with the absolute value of t value equal to 5.01 with the average difference of 7.39 at the level below 0.01 in patients with and without a history of suicide, have a significant difference.
Conclusions: Patients with a history of suicide and psychiatric disorders have weaker emotional expression and a lower ability to tolerate ambiguity than patients without a history of suicide. Also, the degree of avoidance of unpleasant experiences and anxiety sensitivity of these patients is higher than that of patients without a history of suicide. Therefore, educational and therapeutic interventions are recommended to reduce suicide attempts.
