Social participation, barriers, and related factors in older people in Tehran

Introduction: Increasing of elder population in world is a fact. Retirement and limitation of social activity are crises that affect on social participation of older persons. Hence, this study was conducted to determine social participation and related factors of older people in Tehran. Materials & Methods: This descriptive analytical-correlational study was conducted on 330 convenience older people more than 60 in areas of Tehran City in 2014. Demographic characteristics questionnaire and social participation questionnaire of Canadian community health survey were used for the data collection. The data were analyzed with T-test and one-way ANOVA , Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression analysis by SPSS version 20 software. Findings: The mean age of older people was 67.94(±6.40) year and most of them (60.9%) were male. The mean score for social participation was 15.96 (±4.30). Most of older people (37.7%) don’t have admired for social participation. Costs (36%), diseases (30%), and inpatients (20.3%) were factors associated with social participation. The older person with characteristics of low age, male, married, university education, and low number of offspring’s had significantly (p< 0.05) better score of social participation. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that HRQoL of elder people is lower than expect and there is low admiring for social participation of elderly people. Therefore planning for social security and health care services are necessary to improvement of social participation and active aging of elderly people.
