Introduction: Low marital satisfaction is regarded as a fundamental challenge to family health, often stemming from incongruence and differences in couples’ personality factors. The present study aimed to compare personality factors between couples with low and high marital satisfaction in Isfahan.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive-comparative design. The statistical population comprised all married couples aged 25 to 60 years in Isfahan during autumn and winter 2023. In this study, a total of 128 couples (256 individuals) were selected via convenience sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, "16 Personality Factor Questionnaire", and the “ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale”. The qualitative content validity of the instruments was confirmed, and their reliability was determined using internal consistency through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS. 23.
Results: The results of discriminant analysis showed that the discriminant function correctly classified 219 out of 256 participants; accordingly, the overall accuracy of the model in differentiating couples based on the 16 personality factors was obtained at 85.55%. Discriminant analysis revealed that couples with high marital satisfaction were distinguished based on tender-minded, abstractedness, emotional stability, dominance, rule-consciousness, and warmth, whereas couples with low marital satisfaction were differentiated based on self-disclosure, openness to change, apprehension, tolerate disorder, and tension.
Conclusion: Couples’ personality traits play a decisive role in the quality of marital relationships. Accordingly, assessing these personality factors can serve as an effective tool in premarital counseling programs to evaluate spousal compatibility, as well as in tailoring specialized therapeutic interventions for dissatisfied couples.
