Introduction: Temperament, as one of the fundamental individual characteristics in the early years of life, plays an important role in shaping children’s patterns of social interaction and level of social development. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of the “Adler-Dreikurs Parenting Approach Training” and “Acceptance and Commitment-Based Parenting Training” on early childhood behavior and social development in children under 6 years of age.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest–follow-up design and a control group. The statistical population included all mothers of children under 6 years of age who attended comprehensive health centers in Zanjan, Iran, for monthly check-ups in 2025. From this population, 60 mothers were purposively selected based on the cut-off scores of the research instruments and were then randomly assigned, using simple randomization by lottery, to three groups of 20 participants each. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, “Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire–Short Form”, and “Vineland Social Maturity Scale”. The content validity of the instruments was evaluated qualitatively, and their reliability was assessed using internal consistency through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. After the implementation of 8 sessions of the “Adler-Dreikurs Parenting Approach Training” and 9 sessions of “Acceptance and Commitment-Based Parenting Training” for the intervention groups, the data were collected. Data were analyzed using SPSS. 27.
Results: The results of the Bonferroni post hoc test indicated that the mean scores of early childhood behavior and social development were significantly higher in the “Adler-Dreikurs Parenting Approach Training” group than in both the “Acceptance and Commitment-Based Parenting Training” group and the control group (P = 0.001). However, no significant difference was observed between the “Acceptance and Commitment-Based Parenting Training” group and the control group (P=1.000).
Conclusion: The implementation of the “Adler-Dreikurs Parenting Approach Training” can lead to improved parenting practices and enhanced quality of parent–child interactions. Therefore, incorporating this approach into parent education programs may serve as an effective strategy for reducing children’s behavioral problems and promoting family functioning.
