Introduction: Substance abuse is considered one of the major global health challenges. The present study aimed to develop a model between childhood trauma and self-concept, with the mediating role of psychological flexibility in women with Stimulant substance abuse.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive-correlational design, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of women with stimulant substance abuse and a history of childhood trauma who referred to addiction treatment centers in Tehran. A total of 289 participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the demographic questionnaire.  “Childhood Trauma Questionnaire”, the “Self-Concept Inventory”, and the “Psychological Flexibility Questionnaire”. The validity of the study instruments was assessed through qualitative content validity, and reliability was examined using internal consistency via Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Statistical analyses were performed using AMOS .24 and SPSS .26.
Results: The proposed model demonstrated an acceptable fit to the data (χ2/df=1.33,RMSEA=0.03,CFI=0.96,GFI=0.96). Childhood trauma, through the mediating role of psychological flexibility (β=-0.28,P=0.004), significantly predicted self-concept.
Conclusion: Adverse childhood experiences can affect self-concept by influencing psychological flexibility. Accordingly, it is recommended that therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation programs in the field of substance use, in addition to focusing on abstinence, emphasize the enhancement of psychological flexibility and the processing of adverse childhood experiences. Such approaches may contribute to improving self-concept and promoting the mental health of women with Stimulant substance abuse.
