Introduction: Self- injuryy behaviors in adolescence are associated with various consequences such as cognitive impairment, poor interpersonal relationships, and violent crimes, and can increase the occurrence of mental disorders in late adolescence. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of Internet addiction in the relationship between parental maltreatment and adolescent self- injury.
Methods: The present study is a descriptive-correlational study. The statistical population of the study consisted of all male and female students of the first high school level in Karaj in the academic year 2023-2024, and 416 students (280 girls, 136 boys) were selected as the research sample using multi-stage cluster random sampling method. To collect data, a demographic questionnaire, the "Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory", the "Internet Addiction Test" and the "Childhood Maltreatment Questionnaire" were used. The validity
of the instruments was measured using content validity ratio method and the reliability was measured by the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS .25 and Amos 26.
Results: Parental maltreatment and Internet addiction positively predict adolescent self- injury (β=0.28). Parental maltreatment also positively predicts Internet addiction (β=0.29). Also, parental maltreatment can indirectly predict adolescent self- injury through the mediating role of Internet addiction (β=0.38).
Conclusion: The findings indicated the importance of parental maltreatment and Internet addiction in predicting self-harm, and Internet addiction plays a mediating role between parental maltreatment and self- injury. Therefore, in order to prevent and reduce adolescent self- injury behaviors, parenting education courses and the proper use of cyberspace can be held.
