Introduction: With the expansion of Internet use and increasing dependence on it, family roles, including the maternal role, have been affected, and Internet addiction can complicate these relationships as a destructive factor. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between emotional intelligence, defensive style, and acceptance of the maternal role with family functioning: The role of Internet addiction in mothers aged 20 to 40 in Isfahan city.
Methods: The present study was conducted using a descriptive-correlational method. A sample of 302 mothers aged 20 to 40 years who referred to health centers in the 1st district of Isfahan city was selected and entered into the study. 302 were selected based on the Krejcie & Morgan formula and convenience sampling method. Data collection tools included demographic information, "Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire", "Defense Style Questionnaire", "Motherhood Role Acceptance Scale", "Family Assessment Device" and "Internet Addiction Test". Face validity was qualitative, and construct validity was verified by convergent and discriminant validity for the instruments and confirmed. Reliability was verified by internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS. 27 and PLS. 16 statistical software.
Results: By fitting three models, it was found that Internet addiction has a mediating role in the relationship between emotional intelligence and family functioning (t=0.3, P<0.05). Internet addiction does not have a mediating role between maternal role and family functioning (t=0.56, P>0.05). Internet addiction has a mediating role in the relationship between defensive style and family functioning (t=4.546, P<0.0).
Conclusion: There is a positive and significant correlation between internet addiction and emotional intelligence, defensive style, and family functioning. Family functioning has a significant correlation with all variables. It is suggested to seek help from counseling centers to control defensive style, as well as strengthen mothers' emotional intelligence and strengthen acceptance of the maternal role.
