Prediction of Borderline Personality Trait Based on Childhood Trauma with the Mediation of Reflective Functioning and Emotional Schemas in Azad Islamic Students of Karaj Branch

Introduction: Borderline personality is a complex mental disorder associated with instability in interpersonal relationships. The aim of the present study was to predict borderline personality trait based on childhood trauma with the mediation of reflective functioning and emotional schemas in Islamic Azad students of Karaj branch.
Methods: The research method was descriptive-correlation type. The statistical population of this research was the undergraduate students (accounting, management, foreign language, architecture) of Islamic Azad University, Karaj branch in 2023. Among them, according to the criteria for entering the research, 318 people were selected by random and convenience sampling method, and finally the information of 298 people was analysed. To collect data from the demographic questionnaire, "Schizotypal Trait Questionnaire-B form", “Childhood Trauma Questionnaire”, "Reflective Functioning Questionnaire" and the "Short Form of Emotional Schemas Questionnaire" was used. The validity of the instruments was measured by using the content validity ratio method and reliability by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient SPSS. 25 and Amos .25 were analysed.
Results: Childhood trauma (β=0.376) predict emotional schemas. Childhood trauma (β=0.434) predicts reflective functioning. Emotional schemas (β=0.395) predict borderline personality trait. Reflective functioning (β=0.267) predicts borderline personality. childhood trauma (β=0.307) predict borderline personality. Reflective functioning (β=0.116) and emotional schemas (β=0.148) play a mediating role in relation to childhood trauma and borderline personality trait.
Conclusion: The component of childhood trauma directly and indirectly predicts borderline personality trait through reflective functioning and emotional schemas. Therefore, it is suggested that in educational environments, including schools, psychologists lead to the improvement of the mental health of the future generation by providing group therapy and holding suitable workshops for parents and children.
