Introduction: Childhood traumas and attachment styles are among the influencing factors on the attitude toward infidelity. The present study aimed to predict the attitude towards infidelity in married couples of Karaj based on childhood trauma and attachment style.
Methods: The research method used was descriptive correlation. The statistical population of the present study included all married men and women in Karaj city in 2022. Among them, 250 people with a complaint of marital infidelity were selected by the convenience sampling method. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, "Attitudes towards Infidelity Scale", "Adult Attachment Questionnaire" and "Childhood Trauma Questionnaire". The validity of the instruments was measured using content validity using a qualitative method, and reliability was measured using the internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The collected data was analyzed in SPSS. 26.
Results: Among the components of childhood trauma, emotional abuse (P=0.001, β=0.331) and physical abuse (P=0.001, β=0.356) positively and significantly predicted the positive attitude towards infidelity. Secure attachment (P=0.001, β=-0.332) negatively and significantly, and avoidant style (P=0.001, β=0.379) and ambivalent attachment (P=0.001, β=0.451) positively and significantly predicted the positive attitude towards infidelity. Among the components of childhood trauma, emotional abuse (P=0.004, β=-0.276) and physical abuse (P=0.001, β=-0.347) negatively and significantly predicted the negative attitude toward infidelity. Secure attachment (P=0.001, β=0.362) positively and significantly, and avoidant style (P=0.001, β=-0.289) and ambivalent attachment (P=0.001, β=-0.277) negatively and significantly predicted the negative attitude towards infidelity.
Conclusion: Attachment style and childhood trauma predict the attitude toward infidelity. Therefore, it is suggested that family counselors and psychologists focus on attachment style and childhood trauma in couple therapy to correct people's attitudes towards infidelity.
