The Correlation between Spiritual Well- Being and Hope among Nursing Students of Medical Sciences Universities and Islamic Azad Universities of Yazd

Introduction: The spiritual well- being and hope are important factors of health. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between spiritual well-being and hope among nursing students of medical sciences university and Islamic Azad university of Yazd.

Methods: This descriptive-correlational study is conducted among nursing students in Yazd. The sample of this study consists of 550 nursing students (by census sampling) of medical science and Islamic Azad University of Yazd. The data is collected via two questionnaires. First is the “Ellison's Spiritual Well-Being Scale” with three dimensions of cognition, emotion, and action. Second is the “Snyder's Adult Hope Scale”. Previous studies have confirmed validity and reliability of these scales. Data is analyzed by SPSS. 18.

Results: The mean and standard deviation of spiritual well-being and hope in nursing students are 95.04 ± 16.03 and 43.19 ± 6.80 at Azad Medical University and 98.14 ± 13.95 and 45.12 ± 6.78 at Yazd Medical University, respectively. Results show a significant positive correlation between spiritual well-being and hope of students. The correlation coefficients between spiritual well-being and hope of Islamic Azad University and Yazd University of Medical Sciences are r = 0.71, and P < 0.001 and r = 0.78 and P < 0.001. In addition, there is a significant correlation between all dimensions of spiritual well-being and hope. The highest correlation relates to the emotion dimension and the lowest correlation correspond to the action dimension.

Conclusions: The spiritual well-being and hope of nursing students at both universities are above average. Moreover, there is a significant positive correlation between spiritual well-being and hope of students in both universities. Consequently, it is suggested to plan toward enhancing the spiritual well-being and increase in nurses’ hope.
