The Effectiveness of “Dialectical Behavior Therapy” on Basic Psychological Needs and Health Hardiness in Patients with Type 2 Diabetic

Introduction: Health management in patients with type 2 diabetic patients is related to basic psychological needs and health hardiness. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of “Dialectical Behavior Therapy” on basic psychological needs and health hardiness in type 2 diabetic patients. 
Methods: The present study was conducted with a semi-experimental method with a pre-test, post-test and 4-month follow-up design with an intervention group and a control group. The statistical population of this study included patients with type 2 diabetes of Neyriz Shohada hospital in 1400. A number of 40 patients with type 2 diabetes were selected purposively and then by simple random method of lottery type  selected in 2 groups of 20 intervention and control groups. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the “Basic Psychological Needs Scale” and the “Revised Health Hardiness Inventory”. Content validity was measured by qualitative and reliability was measured by internal consistency method by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The intervention group went under 12 sessions of 90 minutes of “Dialectical Behavior Therapy”, while the control group was put on the waiting list for intervention. The instruments were completed by two groups in three rounds of pre-test, post-test and follow-ups. Data were analyzed in SPSS. 23. 
Results: There are no significant differences between the groups in terms of age, gender, education, occupation and marital status as the (P> 0.05). It also shows that the “Dialectical Behavior Therapy” leads to permanent increase of basic psychological needs and health hardiness in type 2 diabetic patients as the (P< 0.05). “Dialectical Behavior Therapy” 28% of the score differences in basic psychological needs and 56% of the health hardiness.
Conclusions: “Dialectical Behavior Therapy” leads to the increase of basic psychological and health hardiness needs. Using this therapy improves the physical and psychological health of patients with type 2 diabetes. It is suggested that this intervention be used to empower patients with type 2 diabetes.
